Geen land kan zich volwaardig ontplooien zolang het de trauma’s uit het verleden niet onder ogen durft te zien, lijkt de Congolese fotograaf en videomaker Sammy Baloji (1978) ons te willen zeggen.

Deze maatschappijkritische kunstenaar onthult zonder gêne de vernietigende invloed van exploiterende culturen op de Congolese natuur en maatschappij. Zwart-witte archiefbeelden van uitgebuite Congolese arbeiders plaatst hij in het hedendaagse, gehavende landschap waar ooit de koloniale machthebbers zich respectloos uitleefden voor eigen gewin. In 2009 ontving Sammy Baloji een Prins Claus Prijs voor zijn krachtige werk.

Sammy Baloji werd in 1978 geboren te Lubumbashi, in de provincie Katanga van de Democratische Republiek Congo. Hij woont en werkt nog steeds in zijn geboortestad, en promoveerde aan de universiteit aldaar in de letteren en de menswetenschappen. Sammy Baloji begon als striptekenaar en legde zich vervolgens toe op fotografie en video. Met deze media wijdde hij tal van werken aan de Katangese cultuur en het koloniale erfgoed binnen de Democratische Republiek Congo. Etnografie, architectuur en urbanisme – thema's die in zijn werk voortdurend terugkeren – zijn de filters waardoor hij de Afrikaanse geschiedenis en identiteit analyseert.

It is impossible for a country to reach its full potential as long as it dare not look the traumas of the past squarely in the face; this seems to be the message of Congolese photographer and video-maker Sammy Baloji (1978). 

This socially critical artist mercilessly lays bare the destructive influence exploitative cultures have had on the nature and society of the Congo. He places black & white archive images of exploited Congolese workers in today’s ravaged landscapes, where colonial rulers once shamelessly chased their desire for profit, without the slightest respect for the consequences. In 2009, Sammy Baloji was awarded a Prince Claus Award for his powerful work. 

Sammy Baloji was born in Lubumbashi, in Katanga province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, in 1978. He still lives and works in his hometown, where he obtained doctoral degrees in the arts and social sciences from the university. Sammy Baloji started out drawing cartoons, later moving into photography and video. He has dedicated many works in these media to Katanga’s culture, as well as the colonial legacy in Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Ethnography, architecture and urbanism are themes that constantly recur in his work – the filters through which he analyses African history and identity.
