Met hun unieke mix van experimentele rock, drony post-folk en de diepste, donkerste blues is de Antwerpse band Flying Horseman niet minder dan een sensatie. Voeg daar hun ijzersterke live-reputatie bij én het heugelijke feit dat ze tijdens het festival hun nieuwe album voor Nederland releasen en je weet zeker dat je dit niet wil missen.

“Wie denken jullie wel dat we zijn?”, vroegen de vier heren van Rats on Rafts zich af. “Wel,” antwoordden wij, “jullie komen uit Rotterdam, jullie hebben de allergeilste postpunkplaat van 2011 gemaakt en jullie zijn druk bezig daarmee de UK te veroveren. Maar op de laatste dag van maart komen jullie de Brakke Grond op stelten zetten”. En zo zal geschieden.

Rats On Rafts blijkt misschien wel de stoerste, spannendste en meest prikkelende band die we de laatste tijd zagen doorgroeien van Local Hero naar meer. Het is ze gegund. – Live XS

2011 was het jaar van Intergalactic Lovers en dat hebben we geweten ook. Met de 11 onwezenlijk aangrijpende popjuweeltjes die Greetings and Salutations bevat, hebben Lara Chedraoui en haar band ons - en met ons vele anderen - sprakeloos achtergelaten. Hoog tijd dus voor de exclusief intieme setting van een Sonic Connections-passage.

Hun mix van melodieuze, soms intieme, dan weer avontuurlijke popmuziek, samen met de unieke stem van zangeres Lara Chedraoui, betovert jong en oud. – De Standaard Online

Ze zitten strak in het pak en zijn gewapend met een reeks hyperaanstekelijke, retrofuturistische songs, waaronder zich intussen al meer dan één Belgische radiohit bevindt. Mathematisch precies en hoogst melodieus: waar Customs komt, blijft geen zinnig mens nog onbewogen. En dat is natuurlijk ook helemaal niet de bedoeling.

Customs is een scherp afgestelde machine die in rap tempo het publiek om de oren slaat met pakkende songs. De stem van Interpol (Paul Banks), de sound van de jaren tachtig, zowel het elektronische als het ruigere geluid en de looks van David Bowie in zijn Thin White Duke-periode; Customs combineert al het goede tot iets beters. - 3voor12

Add in their rock-solid live reputation and the happy coincidence that they are releasing their new album for the Netherlands during the festival, and there are more than enough reasons to put this one on the unmissable list.

“Just who on earth do you think we are?”, the four gentlemen from Rats on Rafts wondered. “Well,” we replied, “you’re from Rotterdam, you made by far the sexiest post-punk record of 2011 and you’re in the process of conquering the UK. But on the last day of March, you’ll come and turn the Brakke Grond upside down”. And so they will.
